The small and peaceful country of Slovenia has long been independent from Yugoslavia. It is thought of as Europe’s undiscovered gem but is slowly making itself known in the tourism industry. Slovenia has a natural attraction to people who simply love nature. The country is very rich in natural resources. Its major cities and local towns still have the elegance and beauty of the Habsburg Empire and Venetian Republic.
The Slovenian transport system is well developed. It's roads are very safe to travel through. Because of its proximity to nearby countries, highways that lead to nearby countries have clear signs so that visitors don't miss them. Slovenia’s vehicle count is gradually increasing, making its roads congested, especially on weekends and during rush hours.
To drive in Slovenia, you need to have a valid driver’s licence from the UK, or an international driver’s licence. You can use these licences for only a year. You need to secure a Slovenia driver’s license if you go over the one-year period.
The flow of traffic is on the right. Most signs and traffic laws in this country are similar with the rest of Europe. Parking can pose a problem and is a little pricey, especially in Slovenia’s city centres.
Be extra careful for there may be a lot of aggressive drivers on the road. The Road accident rate is increasing. Road accidents are usually caused by over speeding, so make sure that you always check speed limit signs. Generally, speed limits in urban areas are set to 50 kph. You can go a little faster on expressways where the speed limit is at 90 kph.
As in any other country, drink driving is prohibited. For your safety, seatbelts are mandatory. Headlights should always be on during the day. It is against the law to use your mobile phone while on the road. Motorists riding on motorcycles are required to wear helmets at all times.
