Car Hire in Slovakia

Before you book your car hire in Slovakia, why not read through our Slovakia driving guide...

Slovakia is a wondrous place in central Europe it has high mountains, historical towns, and magnificent waters. Slovakia is also a country of cultural events and traditions. It is definitely a country worth visiting.

If you intend to drive in Slovakia, do it on the right hand side of the road. This basic regulation is followed in most of Europe and was initiated in Slovakia when the Germans once colonized the country.

On highways and motorways, the set speed limit is 130 kph. Outside built-up areas, the speed limit goes down to 90 kph. Within city and town proper, motorists should follow 60 kph. Radar traps are installed on various roads so don’t attempt to speed. speeding fines are quite high.

Drinking and driving laws are ultimately stringent. Slovakian laws require a 0% alcohol content in the blood. That means the drivers should not consume even a single drop before driving.

Seatbelts are mandatory. Make sure your passengers both in the front and at back are all buckled up; children may ride the front seat if they are above 12 years of age. Young children who can sit ate the back alone should be properly restrained by a car safety seat.

Always bring with you all the vehicle’s documents, as well as yours, secure an international driving permit if you have to before arriving to Slovakia. A valid national driver’s permit is enough documentation if you are traveling from the UK.

Petrol stations are conveniently situated all over the country, so fuel should not be a problem for you. Petrol prices could vary from one station to another. The fuel sold in Slovakia is usually high quality. Drivers cannot use their mobile phones while driving. And there are areas that implement the use of headlights no matter what time of the day, so to be on the safe side, so ensure you check local signs to see if you should have your lights on.

The police have the authority to stop you, to check your car, and to subject you to an alcohol content test, as is the case in the UK.

Summary:

  • Seatbelts should always be worn
  • Children should sit in the back
  • Road quality may change from place to place
  • For safety reasons, you should never drink and drive
