When in Ireland you should drive on the left.. If you have a UK licence there is no need to obtain an international drivers licence to drive in Ireland, however if your local licence is not in English, you should have it translated. Speed limit is set at 112 kph on motorways. Most towns have a speed limit of 48 kph. You can go twice as fast on major roads at 96 kph. To be sure of what the speed limit is on a particular road, check the circular sign posted on the road that indicates speed limit. Always follow designated speed limit since the authorities use speed cameras to catch lawbreakers.
Drink driving is strictly prohibited. Heavy penalties and confiscation of license is implemented if you are found to be over the legal alcohol limit. Seatbelts should be worn at all times, both in the rear and in the front. There are a no toll roads in this country. However in Dublin there are two toll bridges.
You should only park in designated areas. If you happen to see yellow lines on the road, this means that it is prohibited to park in that area. Double yellow lines mean no parking at any time. Single yellow lines means that you are only allowed to park in that area on designated time. Broken yellow lines mean that there are fewer parking restrictions, and you should check sign posts at the side of the road to see what these are. Pay and display machines are common in Ireland, and you should ensure that you display your ticket when parked.
