Driving in Denmark - Driving Rules and Regulations

Driving in Denmark

Before you book your car hire in Denmark, why not read through our Denmark driving guide...

If you love to travel or you’re on a business trip and prefer to do your own sightseeing or driving, then hiring a car is a great way to see this great country. Organising your car hire in Croatia through Car Hire 3000 gives you complete peace of mind and means that you can secure your car long before you travel.

If you have a valid driver’s licence issued from your country, it will do just fine. While driving, be sure to take your driving licence with you, and if your licence does not have a photograph, you may want to take your passport for identification, but be sure to keep this safe at all times.

The speed limit in Denmark is set at 50 kilometers per hour (30 miles per hour) in built up areas. While on the open road the speed limit is set at 80 km/h (50 mph). When driving on the motorway the speed limit is set at 130 km/h (80 mph). Speed limits in this country are strictly implemented. Radar traps monitor your speed and you may be asked to pay on-the-spot fines if caught speeding.

Denmark has strict drink driving and safety laws. Anything above the legal alcohol level could mean imprisonment, so when driving in Denmark, always be conscious of your alcohol intake. Seatbelts for front and rear passengers are compulsory. Children under the age of 3 in the rear cannot travel unless they use a proper child restraint system. Children over the age of 3 must use appropriate restraints on front and rear. If you have a mobile phone, you will need to use a hands free device when driving or face heavy fines.

On-the-spot fines are issued upon violation of any traffic regulations. Just be sure to ask for official receipts whenever you pay any fine.

First aid kits and fire extinguishers are advised but not compulsory when driving in denmark. Headlamp converters are necessary if driving a right hand drive vehicle, and a warning triangle should be carried at all times. Visibility vests, on the other hand, have become compulsory in Italy, Austria and Spain and most likely will become compulsory throughout the European Union (EU). The vests are used if you find yourself stranded on the motorway.

When driving in Denmark, cars should use dipped headlights during the day. UK registered vehicles displaying Euro-plates (circle of 12 stars above the national identifier on blue background) no longer need a GB sticker when driving in EU countries. But if you plan to bring your own car from home, a GB sticker is a requirement or else an on-the-spot fine can be collected.

Summary:

  • Speed limit 130 kmph max
  • Only use yor mobile phone with a hands free kit when driving
  • Carry your driving licence with you
  • For safety reasons, you should never drink and drive
