Driving in the Czech Republic

Before you book your car hire in the Czech Republic, why not read through our Czech Republic driving guide...

Czech Republic is a place of rich cultural heritage within an attractive natural setting. There are a lot of mineral springs within its territory. Spa towns and spa houses are great places to visit during your visit.

Czech Republic is a magical European country of cathedrals, bridges, towers, and domes. By hiring a car you can really appreciate everything that the country has to offer. By organising your car hire in Croatia with Car Hire 3000 before you leave the UK, you can travel with complete peace of mind.

Tourists from the UK can drive using their UK licence (remember to take this with you). Tourists coming from the US can also use their respective local licence.

There's a zero-tolerance policy for drink drivers in Czech Republic. Never ever consider driving when you have consumed alcohol. Seat belts should always be fastened, even for those occupying the back seat. Children are not permitted to sit in the front seat unless they are over 12 years of age. Youngsters should be seated on a child safety seat.

Roads in Czech Republic do not have toll booths. If you intend to use the motorway, a window sticker has to be purchased beforehand and should be attached inside the windshield. These can be bought from a petrol station or border crossings. Rented cars should already come with this (you can enquire at the car hire desk whan you pick up your car). Keep the rectangular part of the sticker because the police may request it as proof of purchase.

Petrol is readily available as there are stations on all major roads. Unleaded, diesel, and LPG can be easily purchased. The speed limit for a car or a motorcycle is 130 kmph in a motorway, 90 kmph outside build-up areas. In built up areas the speed limit is 50 kmph. If your car has a trailer or a caravan, the speed limit drops to 80 kmph for both motorways and outside build-up areas. Within build-up areas, it is still at 50 kmph.

Road signs are set up everywhere showing which way to go. You won't get in the wrong direction in Czech Republic. But road accidents are frequent within the area. Always practice safe driving.

Summary:

  • Speed limit 130 kmph max
  • You will need to purchase a sticker to drive on the motorway
  • Carry your driving licence with you
  • For safety reasons, you should never drink and drive
