If you want to drive around Costa Rica, here are some of the traffic regulations you should keep in mind.
Always bring along your passport (or at least a photocopy of it). It should have on it a photo of you and the date you entered Costa Rica. Also bring with you your driving licence at all times. Also make sure you always take the vehicle documentation given to you when you hired the vehicle. If you are stopped by the police you will need to present this along with your driving licence and passport.
On secondary roads and highways, maximum speed is set at 60 kmph. In most urban areas, speed limit is at 40 kmph. If you are approaching a school zone or a hospital, keep your speed at 25 kmph. You can check the speed limit road sign as this may vary depending on which city you are in.
When driving around the country, be wary of potholes and slow moving vehicles on the road. Always try to get a good map so you can go around Costa Rica with great ease.
All car passengers are required to strap on their seatbelts at all times. Only park at designated areas. Driving along beaches are not allowed, except if there is no alternative road to take to cross to another town. Drinking and driving is punishable by law. Driving under the influence of drugs can lead to serious charges. If a road officer signals you to pull over, immediately do so. This may mean that you are at a checkpoint, have violated a law, or that a warning that there is an accident ahead. Police officers can perform alcohol tests on drivers if so needed. Remember that never turn over your personal documents to anyone, theseare your private property. Police offers can request to take a look at them but never to keep them.
