You might want to constantly check the vehicular restrictions in the city you are about to go. There is a traffic scheme, which the government is implementing, that prohibits vehicles with a license plate ending with a particular numbers especially on the roads of Santiago. You can check with Vehicle Restriction Hotline at telephone no. (2) 700-0142. You can also get in touch with the Highway Information Hotline by dialing 139.

Maximum speed limits in most places are set at 62 mph or 100 kilometers an hour. Motorways have increased speed limit at 120 kilometers per hour. Keep your speed at 50 kilometers per hour whenever in the city and remember to drive on the right!

Take note that most Chilean drivers are not really the most courteou, especially at crossroads. Drivers often jump red lights and signaling can be infrequent.

If you drink and drive in Chile it considered a very serious offence, so you should never drink before driving.

‘Common sense’ driving rules should also be applied, the same as you would in the UK. Always drive slowly when you are approaching a road junction or a hill. Give way to pedestrians at all times. Never drive against the flow of normal traffic. Drive only inside marked lanes. Always check you vehicle for proper lighting.

Breaking these traffic laws could result in fines and confiscation of your licence.

Summary:

  • Speed limit 120kmph max on motorways
  • Drive on the right
  • Look out for local speed limits
  • For safety reasons, you should never drink and drive
