Bosnia, since its recovery from the war, is slowly on its way to becoming a tourism hotspot. Today, a lot of people are finding Bosnia a great place to visit.
Visiting Bosnia is always a good experience. City driving is one activity preferred by tourists because the remnants of the war can be observed from the roadside.
Before taking a car for hire in Bosnia, tourists must first secure an international driver's licence. That is in addition to your national licence. You should apply for this before leaving the UK.
The driving speed limit in Bosnia is not really clear. Traffic signs indicating maximum speeds are not always placed along the sides of the roads. Generally, the speed limit is 60 kmph. On a straight stretch of a road, it can go up to 80 kmph, but you will need to keep your eyes open and ensure you are aware of the local limits. Fast driving fast is not advised as there are mortar holes in some roads which can be hazardous if driving at excessive speeds.
Seat belts are to be worn at all times. Drivers are prohibited from using their mobile phones while driving. Using dipped headlights is a must in poor visibility. Fines will be collected if caught violating and driving laws. Drinking and driving is of course, not tolerated. Anyone caught driving whilst over the legal alcohol limit can be heavily fined or imprisoned. Fines can be collected on the spot, or if the offence is serious enough, you may be taken to court.
Fuel should be available easily, and both leaded and unleaded petrol are sold at petrol stations along main roads.
Motorists should always carry replacement bulbs in their vehicles, as well as a first-aid kid and a warning triangle.
Summary:
- Speed limits may not always be clear so keep your eyes open
- Mobile phones should not be used when driving
- Seat belts should be worn at all times
- For safety reasons, you should never drink and drive
